Retrograde Ejaculation

Retrograde ejaculation is ejaculation which does not follow the normal pathway of semen and being expelled through the urethra.

It is in fact semen going into the bladder and the use of drugs like antidepressants and alpha-blockers are the main causes of this problem. It has also been loosely termed as a dry orgasm. It is also defined as a condition where the semen or sperm does not exit the body but goes back into the bladder at the time of orgasm.

What are the causes of Delayed Ejaculation?

Anything can disrupt the nervous system and the path to the penis or the testicles such as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, diabetes, alcoholism, and surgery in the male pelvis can cause delayed ejaculation.

  • Certain diuretics
  • Antipsychotic medications

Treatment for Retrograde Ejaculation

Some medications are available for treating the problem. One of those is a Tofranil taking thirty to forty-five minutes before participating in intercourse may cause that muscle to constrict and allow the fluid to go forward instead of backward.

There is also the classification of antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine or Bromo pheniramine that can be used half an hour or forty-five minutes before engaging in sexual intimacy. There are decongestants such as

  • Sudafed
  • Ephedrine
  • Phenylephrine

The above drugs can cause the muscle to contract. Using decongestant medication can raise your blood pressure and heart rate which can be dangerous if you have high blood pressure or heart disease.

If the medication does not work then it is possible to use assisted reproductive technology or techniques to get your partner pregnant. This process consists of sperm that is recovered after orgasm and ejaculation that has gone back into the bladder. Men who are suffering from retrograde ejaculation are able to get their partners pregnant once they seek medical attention.

Treatment for Delayed Ejaculation

At present, no drug is approved from the Food and drug administration for treating delayed ejaculation. There are behavioral techniques that are used such as temporarily suspending the use of masturbation and limiting orgasm to sexual encounters and also which is often helpful is to use increased sexual stimulation can occur with the help of a vibrator or with the couple watching erotic videos. However, treatment is usually successful in this common condition.

It has been observed by the medical professionals that certain medications can help people who are suffering from delayed ejaculation or retarded ejaculation. Cyproheptadine (Periactin), amantadine (Symmetrel), and buspirone (Buspar).

Side Effects:

Side effects of the Periactin drug include feeling sleepy all the time, dizziness, unable to see the image or picture, constipation, and runny nose. If you notice these side effects while taking this drug, we would advise you to consult your physician immediately. He or she may reduce the dosage of your drug or switch you to another medication.

Side effects of Symmetrel drug include loss of balance or coordination, nausea, unable to see images perfectly, upset of stomach, runny nose, diarrhea, dry mouth, constipation, feeling nervous all the time, loss of appetite, strange dreams, feeling sleepy all the time, headache, and difficulty in getting sleep.

Side effects of buspirone include dizziness, high levels of excitement, headache, ringing in the ears, feeling nervous all the time, sore throat, feeling sleepy all the time, stuffy nose, blurred vision, stomach upset, restlessness, dry mouth, and sleep problems such as insomnia or strange dreams.

Psychological counseling is needed for people who are suffering from delayed ejaculation. If their problem is caused due to psychological problems like depression, and anxiety, then we would advise you to consult a psychiatrist.

Retrograde ejaculation is not a very common neurologic problem. It is usually related to medication to surgery or various medical conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or spinal cord injury.

Delayed ejaculation is a common problem affecting millions of people around the world and it is usually related to aging or previous surgery within the pelvis. Behavior modification or increasing genital stimulation will significantly help resolve the problem.
